Alexandria Firm Earns National Recognition

Watkinsville, Ga. – The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has presented the Roy O. Martin Lumber Co., of Alexandria, La., its 2004 Corporate Achievement Award. Martin Lumber Hunting Lease Manager Billy Jowers accepted the award during QDMA's 4 th annual Convention recently in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“This award recognizes the public or private company that has contributed the most financially or in-kind to the QDMA during the previous year,” said QDMA Executive Director Brian Murphy. “The Roy O. Martin Lumber Co. has been instrumental in the QDMA's growth in recent years.”

Beginning with a partnership established in 2001, the firm now provides QDMA memberships to nearly 2,000 of its leaseholders on company lands in Louisiana. The company also has implemented Quality Deer Management practices on the majority of its 580,000-acre land base and hired its first wildlife biologist to work with its nearly 1,200 hunting clubs.

“The results of the company's efforts are clear – better managed deer herds and happier hunters,” Murphy said. “But it has done even more. Last year, company staff organized a meeting with several other timber companies in the region and encouraged them to established similar partnerships with the QDMA. This meeting already has led to one additional timber company partnership, and a couple more are expected to follow.”

Murphy said that the company also makes significant financial contributions to the QDMA and regularly co-sponsors QDMA educational events, publications and meetings like the Southeast Deer Study Group.

The QDMA is a national non-profit wildlife conservation organization headquartered in Watkinsville, Ga., with members in all 50 states and several foreign countries.

The QDMA is dedicated to ethical hunting, sound deer management and the preservation of the deer-hunting heritage. To learn more about the QDMA and how it can help your hunting, call (800) 209-DEER [(800) 209-3337] or visit www.qdma.com .
